Real Senior Frontend System Design Interview 2026 (AI Coding Included)

Chapters 5 sections

  1. 0:00Introduction and Requirements
  2. 5:20State Architecture
  3. 15:10Minimum Viable Frontend
  4. 19:55Web Performance and Real-Time Data

Key concepts in this video:

1. Requirements Gathering

Senior engineers extract functional and non-functional requirements rather than accepting a UI design at face value, categorizing needs like performance, accessibility, and security.

Watch section from 1:23 →

2. State Architecture and Modeling

Analyzing the UI to derive state variables and data entities, such as date intervals, data series, and data points, while keeping state minimal and component-level.

Watch section from 5:20 →

3. State Transitions and Data Fetching

Managing state changes driven by backend data synchronization or user events, utilizing tools like TanStack for reusable data fetching and caching.

Watch section from 12:01 →

4. Minimum Viable Frontend and Tooling

Establishing foundational choices such as React, design systems, CSS modules, semantic HTML, build tools like Vite, and static/dynamic code quality checks.

Watch section from 15:10 →

5. Web Performance and Real-Time Updates

Evaluating loading speed, reactiveness, and layout stability, while comparing polling, WebSockets, and server-sent events for real-time graph data updates.

Watch section from 19:55 →

6. Caching Strategies

Applying efficient caching policies to static assets via CDNs and leveraging HTTP and client-side state caching for read-heavy past financial data.

Watch section from 27:20 →

7. AI Integration in Development and Workflows

Using coding agents and models with stable anchor artifacts like design systems and state diagrams, alongside code review agents and local AI alternatives.

Today we're going to go through a system design interview for a senior front end position. This is a real interview, one of our mentees got. Spoiler, they got the offer. It was a six figure position for one of the biggest financial companies in the world. And, can you tell us what was this interview about and what made it so special? Sure, so basically it was an interview where they were invited on site and they couldn't use anything digital.
