What’s up boyz and girlz?
First things first, I just released a video with some developer predictions for 2026:
(spoiler alert: AI won’t replace you any time soon!)
Watch all of it on YouTube: 2026 predictions video.
Now, the million dollar question:
What’s the most crucial skill to survive as a developer in the “age of AI”?
Is it context engineering?
Is it agentic coding?
False!
The most important skill to survive the “AI psychosis” is… FOCUS!
Being able to ignore the noise… And keep building your skills… No matter how many scary headlines you read.
Because it seems like nobody gives a sh**t anymore.
Everyone is obsessed with shortcuts.
Nobody cares about code quality.
Or about technical mastery.
(Ohh that’s exactly what our Software Mastery program can help you with… See if you are a fit here.)
In fact, AI overuse is clearly making us dumber… Bloating our codebases… And turning the software industry into a massive dumpster!
My question for AI doomers is…
“Where are you running so fast?”
I'll tell you where.
We are moving at speed of light towards sh**ty code… Sh**ty software… And sh**ty work culture.
Here’s another question for the drifters…
Does the software industry even has a "not enough code" problem?
Did the Metaverse fail because developers couldn't code fast enough?
Did Alexa burned so much money because of too much code?
Nope.
They failed because of a lack of product vision.
Is the incompetence of the folks up in the management... The CEOs, CMOs, and CPOs that kills software companies... Not software developers.
MBAs teach you a lot about how to "network".
But very little about how to actually build a product that works.
This cost cutting obsession will cost some Big Tech companies their future.
Anyone remember how the Boeing 737 Max crashed killing 346 people? Because of a failure in the software logic… Which was written by outsourced programmers making as little as $9 per hour?
That's exactly what AI is doing to the software industry... At massive scale.
Planes might not crash yet... But AWS does... Like 15 times a day.
Senior Dev tip: The more you improve your skills, the more you will be able to work for companies who don't treat you as an expendable number on their balance sheet. Get into one of those companies and stay there :)
(Software Mastery program can help you with that… See if you are a fit here.)
And, the final fact AI boosters don’t want to accept.
For AI coding to actually be reliable…
You would need to specify your requirements, your context and agent configs… With the same level of detail that they would look almost like code.
No shit, Sherlock?
One could say you ran so fast, that you ran into yourself.
Pathetic.
For my fellow developers…
Whenever you feel confused… Follow the money.
AI companies are burning billions of dollars every day… They need this doomer AI narrative to take over the markets…
Otherwise the money stops flowing, and the machines stop sloppping.
You don’t have to believe me.
In fact, I ask you not to believe me. I ask you to look at the numbers yourself. Work a bit with Claude Code.
It seems like magic at the beginning... If you are building a greenfield project, it might even be able to do the whole thing itself.
But, give it a larger code base.
Give it unclear requirements.
Give it real constraints.
And you will see the harsh reality behind it!
How it “hallucinates” with even the smallest details.
How code still has to be checked by a human if you want it to be stable.
And how that little vibe-coded app or yours becomes a real mess at the speed of light.
More on that next week.
Written with love from your fellow human
Dragos
P.S. I wish I was more of a gentleman… But my message to all the AI CEOs, all the Silicon Valley self-proclaimed elite and all the other CEOs following them like blind sheep… My message to all of those is: F**K YOU!
You are making the world a more miserable place… And you will be in for a big wake up call when the money tap dries out.
And to the middle managers who just push whatever comes from upstairs onto their burnout employees… F**K YOU TOO!
Leadership comes with responsibility… Your responsibility was to stand up for the people who trusted you with their time and their careers. Not obsessing over cutting costs…
When the real problem is you are constantly building the wrong thing (like the Metaverse, Blockchain, Big Data and all the crap you’ve been burning billions on already).
The whole point of having an education system was… Besides teaching us some Computer Science, Calculus or Linear Algebra… To teach us how to think by ourselves!
Well, it seems like the ladies and gentlemen from finance, media... And even our beloved software industry skipped that class.
Anyways, to the honest hard working devs who make a living out of this craft… Paying mortgages… Putting their kids in school…. Hang in there folks… This too shall pass!
There’s nothing more valuable in this economy than a thinking brain.
Keep thinking :)
P.S. You can call me whatever you want… Anti-system, anti-progress, etc… But this comes from a fellow capitalist who sells stuff for a living.
P.S. Some of you asked me to publish this on Substack so you can share it.. I am thinking about it… Maybe I will publish these on our blog though… Platforms come and go.
P.S. I guess your management is also pushing AI everywhere at any cost... My advice is to go with the flow... Do your 8 hours of chitty chatting with Claude... Take frequent coffee breaks... Update your resume... They pay you and they pay for AI. But keep an eye on the market and keep your skills sharp. Hasta la vista, baby!
